MES Pine Script Strategy for Prop Firm Evaluations

MES is the S&P 500 micro contract — the most forgiving instrument for a first prop firm eval. At a fraction of a full ES tick, you have room to use meaningful stops without spending your daily loss budget in two trades. Our strategy trades a prior-session range sweep with VWAP confirmation — a clean, mechanical setup built specifically for 50k accounts.

Why MES is the best instrument for a first prop firm eval

MES is exactly one-tenth the size of full ES. A full ES point moves $50; an MES point moves $5. That single difference changes everything about how safely a strategy can size into an evaluation.

On a 50k Topstep account with a $1,000 daily loss limit, several MES contracts with a multi-point stop cost a modest amount per losing trade — enough for several consecutive stop-outs before the daily limit triggers. The same setup on full ES contracts can burn through that limit on the very first stop. That's not a strategy problem, it's a contract-size problem, and it ends more evaluations than bad signal logic ever does.

  • $1.25/tick: meaningful position sizing inside strict daily loss limits at every major firm
  • Highly liquid: tight bid-ask spread, fast fills, no slippage surprises
  • Universal access: available at Apex, Topstep, MFFU, Bulenox, Tradeify, and every other CME futures prop firm without special permissions
  • Identical chart to ES: every support/resistance level and indicator value matches the full contract — just a fraction of the dollar cost per trade

Most traders who fail a 50k evaluation aren't running a bad strategy — they're running a strategy sized for a 100k or 150k account. MES gives room to be right about direction while still being wrong about timing.

The MES prior-session sweep strategy — how it works

The previous session's RTH high and low are two of the most-watched levels in any S&P session. Institutions use them as order-flow reference points; retail traders park stops just beyond them. That combination produces a recurring pattern: price often sweeps through one of those levels early in the RTH session, absorbing stop orders, before reversing back into the prior range.

  1. Prior-session levels marked at the open: the script identifies the previous RTH high and low automatically at 9:30 ET.
  2. Sweep confirmation: price must trade a small buffer beyond the level before a setup counts — filtering out brief wick touches.
  3. VWAP reversion entry: after the sweep, entry triggers only once price returns to session VWAP — confirming reversal instead of chasing the initial move.
  4. Fixed exit parameters: a capped point stop below or above the sweep extreme, with a fixed point target on the other side.
  5. Force-flat at the close: every position closes by end of RTH — no overnight holds.

Daily Kill Switch

Trading halts automatically once session losses reach a configurable share of the firm's daily loss limit.

Bar-Close Entries

Every entry triggers on a confirmed 5-min bar close — no intrabar fills, no repainting.

VWAP Filter

On by default. Requires price to return to VWAP after the sweep before entry, screening out low-quality reversals.

Entry Window

Restricted to the first 90 minutes of RTH, where the sweep pattern shows the highest frequency and reliability.

Contract sizing for 50k prop firm accounts

Recommended starting contract counts for MES at each major firm's 50k tier, sized against a moderate point stop:

Firm Daily Limit Contracts Stop Risk / Trade
Apex 50k None 5 MES 6.5 pts $162.50
Topstep 50k $1,000 4 MES 6.5 pts $130.00
MFFU 50k $1,250 2 MES 6.5 pts $65.00
Tradeify 50k (Growth) None* 6 MES 6.5 pts $195.00
Bulenox 50k None 5 MES 6.5 pts $162.50

*Tradeify's Growth path uses a soft pause rather than a hard daily loss figure — see the Tradeify guide for details.

These are starting points, not maximums. The setup guide included with the Starter plan covers scaling contract count as the evaluation's equity buffer grows.

Prop firms that work well with MES

Topstep — eod trailing, $1,000 daily limit

Topstep's eod trailing drawdown suits this strategy well — a sweep often runs well through the level before reversing, which looks like a floating loss intraday. On a firm with an intraday trail, that unrealized loss could move the floor; on Topstep's end-of-day model, it doesn't — only closed equity matters. Four MES contracts at the sizing above leaves room for several consecutive losing trades before the daily limit is reached.

Apex — no daily loss limit, intraday trailing

No daily loss limit means the script's kill switch only has to protect the trailing threshold, not an artificial session cap. Five contracts at the sizing above, with a fixed point target, produces clean equity steps that don't unexpectedly tighten the intraday trailing floor.

MyFundedFutures — static, $1,250 daily limit

MFFU's daily limit calls for the most conservative sizing of the group. The upside is the static floor never moves as the account profits — a strong early week actually widens the effective buffer rather than tightening a trailing one.

Bulenox — eod trailing, no daily loss limit

Bulenox's drawdown type and lack of a daily limit make it the most relaxed environment for this strategy — full sizing with no session-level cap means the sweep pattern can work without the kill switch interfering. Tradeify's Growth path shares that same eod trailing drawdown and soft daily-loss treatment, which is why it sizes just as generously in the table above.

Many traders run both at once — MES on a 50k eval and ES on a 100k or 150k account. The Pine Script supports both instruments, with the sizing parameters independently configurable, and every TradersPost webhook alert routes through TradersPost the same way regardless of which contract is running.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MES Pine Script strategy?
An MES Pine Script strategy is an automated strategy written in TradingView's Pine Script for the Micro E-mini S&P 500 — one-tenth the size of full ES, at $1.25 a tick versus $12.50. It identifies setups, fires entries on bar close, manages the stop and target, and sends webhook alerts to an execution bridge like TradersPost for hands-free order placement on your prop firm account.
Is MES good for 50k prop firm accounts?
Yes — it's one of the best-suited instruments for a 50k account. At $1.25 a tick, you can run several contracts with a multi-point stop while keeping per-trade risk well under a typical daily loss limit, leaving room to absorb a normal losing streak without a single rough session ending the evaluation.
Can I automate MES trading on Topstep or Apex?
Yes. A TradingView alert fires from the Pine Script, an execution bridge such as TradersPost receives the webhook, and the order lands on your Tradovate or Rithmic account. Both Apex Trader Funding and Topstep permit automation — Topstep on both the Combine and funded accounts, Apex on the evaluation and most funded plans.
What is the difference between MES and ES for prop firm evals?
MES and ES track the same S&P 500 index and share an identical chart — the only difference is dollar value: MES is $1.25 a tick and $5 a point; ES is $12.50 a tick and $50 a point. On a 50k account with a tight daily loss limit, MES lets you size meaningfully without spending your entire daily budget on one or two trades. ES fits better on 100k+ accounts. Our Starter plan ($19/mo) covers MES; the Pro plan ($29/mo) covers ES.
